Yesterday, one of the most important recent players in the history of Real Madrid returned to the Santiago Bernabeu. Sergio Ramos returned to a place where he called home for 16 years, a place where he achieved everything and after his goal in Lisbon against Atletico, he forever entered the hearts of Madrid fans.

However, he returned without much noise and without being eagerly awaited. The sensitivity of the game with Suiza and the presence of the new UFC world champion in the Bernabeu, Topuria, and the special reception of him, Sergio Ramos, and his return put under the spotlight. He even got booed by a part of the stadium during moments in the game and protesting against two disallowed Real goals.

Everything was limited to the warm-up and Suiza’s lineup announcement and the mention of Ramos.

The first cheers came as soon as he stepped onto the field to warm up and it was accompanied by semi-filled stands. Shortly after, he moved towards other areas to receive more love from the fans while having his hand on his heart.

Then, when Suiza’s lineup was announced and his name was called, the stadium announcer paused briefly and he stood in front of the fans for about 20 seconds, while the stadium was full. Finally, on the pitch, Nacho warmly welcomed him, and then both of them watched Topuria’s presence in the center of the field and his honorary lap.

This was all that happened about Ramos before the start of the game. A warm welcome, but not in legendary proportions, as this time Real’s friendly rival was involved anyway.

Return to Bernabeu after 4 years

Four years ago on the 1st of March 2020, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu with goals from Vinicius and Mariano. Those were days when the coronavirus pandemic had just started, and a week later La Liga was suspended for four months. That game was Ramos’ last appearance at the Bernabeu.

No one could imagine that Sergio Ramos’ last game at the Bernabeu as a Real player. Since then, everything he did with Real Madrid at home was at the Di Stefano stadium. Until May 22, 2021, the last game of that season, against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica, where he didn’t play and was on the bench.

A few days after that match, the bitter official news came that Ramos was leaving Real Madrid.

The legendary defender did not have playing conditions in the PSG match against Real in the Champions League round of 16 second leg and watched the game from the stands. Ramos was injured and couldn’t play for Paris. Last night, however, he was able to feel the warmth of the fans’ support again, fans who once again reminded him of his greatness and glory. But many believe that Ramos didn’t deserve this, and wish he had signed a contract extension sooner and never left Real.
