“Sports 3” reported that Raphael Varane recalled his first encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid training and confirmed that he had asked the star to call him by his nickname.

Varane completed a dream move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2011. Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, had been at the Santiago Bernabeu for several years and was arguably Madrid’s brightest star at that time.

The Manchester United defender described his first encounter with Ronaldo in an interview with Canal Plus. When asked if it’s true that when Ronaldo called him “Varane,” he responded by saying, “I’m Rafa,” he said:“Yes, that’s true. I think there’s no need to be embarrassed about this. I’m someone who’s very cautious outside, but on the field, you have to have your place and be respected.”

He spoke about the level of competition at Real Madrid and the motivation to win major titles:“This is the main challenge of big teams. You have to go towards success with energy. When you play a game every 3 days, you can’t put all your energy into everything. You can’t run a marathon every day. There were times when in a week we played in the El Clasico, Champions League, and again in the El Clasico, which made you feel like you’ve spent your whole life.”
